The grand Columbian Hotel was built on Wellesley Islands at T.I. Park in 1892 on the site of the former Thousand Islands Park Hotel that burnt to the ground in 1890. The new Columbian Hotel was built with fire prevention measures in mind but ultimately would fail to save the hotel from the same fate as the first. In 1912 the Columbian Hotel also caught fire and burnt to the ground in what would become the worst fire in T.I. Park history with over 98 cottages and other structures also perishing in the blaze. Fire was the ultimate enemy of the grand 19th century hotels claiming all but a few in the late 19th and early 20th century’s.
